BE VAN VARK

1_Be_van_Vark_bajaBe van Vark was born in 1965 and lives and works in Berlin. Beyond her own artistic dance work, she teaches and is engaged as guest choreographer for projects and other companies. She initiates and works in many dance projects in urban spaces and various social contexts. Her broad variety of activities are characterized by the passion of bringing together different people and different styles. Finding ways of movement for one person, or for hundreds of people, she uses choreography in her performances that is specific to the venue or the public space of the performance. Her work explores those topics relevant to society through the power of movement as art and collaborates with other art forms, specially videodance. With the performances of her Kompanie van Vark (1994 – 2002) she won several international awards. From 2001 to 2006 she directed the dance department of “Die Etage”, school for the performing arts in Berlin. Since 1996 she is the artistic director of the dance department of the Internationales JugendKunst- und Kulturzentrums Schlesische 27 and is a driving force in the conceptual development of this art center. In this context she also founded the performance group 27 dance monkeys.

Since 2002 she works with her concept of tanztheater-global, a videdance project pooling professionals with non-professional dancers and performers on an international level. More than 30 projects based on this concept were realized to this day: projects with school classes as well as performances funded i.e. by the Hauptstadtkulturfonds like dialogues in transit (2005) and urban delights (2007). With Silencio, Saudade e Sonho (2009), O Pulso (2010) and Sonho em Moviemento (2011), funded by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, Be van Vark transferred her concept of tanztheater-global on the Cape Verde Islands.

From her huge network arise many projects, co-operations and engagements. To highlight but a few recent engagements: May 2014 Gustav Holsts Planets with 350 performers (Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester, Frankfurt/Oder), collaboration with Bauhaus Archive Berlin (Kinder zum Olymp Award 2014), dance monkeys in Junipark and poetics of places (site-specific performance projects June 2014, Berlin).
